At St Thomas’ Primary School, we believe that a high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils. We equip children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design, allowing them to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
Through art and design, children will learn to record from first-hand experience and from imagination, as well as select individual ideas to use in their own work. They will develop creativity through a range of simple and more complex activities, whilst improving their ability to control materials, tools and techniques.
At St Thomas’, we have a wide range of resources to support the teaching of art and design across our school and we enable all pupils, regardless of their ability and individual needs, to have access to the full range of activities available.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, pupils will be taught to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products, whilst developing a wide range of art and design techniques. All children will foster an understanding and appreciation of different practices and disciplines, as well as great artists, architects, craftspeople and designers in history.
